You So Big & Bad!
We consider ourselves unique. The whole theory of our existence and the existence of the universe is based upon the idea of human uniqueness. This is almost always taken to the next step; namely that nothing exists outside of human consciousness and perception. The inevitable hubris this leads to is the ruinous belief that reality is a malleable as human perception.
The number one is the basic unit of measurement. All social systems are an egocentric extension of one plus one equals two. We have never mastered, and rarely theorized, anything beyond this. Now, one plus one, while in itself indisputably equals two (and has many useful applications in practical life), is neither where it begins nor ends. We are in an endless struggle to codify the phenomenon of existence. We created a scale so that we can fearfully hide from the fact that existence is unfathomable and cannot be measured. This traps us in the delusion that the scale actually and accurately represents anything but the scale itself. We think the scale, and the symbols we use to make it workable, are the whole of existence, and nothing exists beyond it. And for the reasons mentioned in the first paragraph, the mindset behind these illusions theoretically creates the catalyst for human extinction.
This is our clumsy attempt to reduce the universe to something comprehensible to the human mind. Very little effort is ever made to expand perception to see beyond the limits of scale and codification. This holds the danger of filling the mind, the potential home to the most noble goals and aspirations, with trash; and produces little to no measurable result that assists human existence in realizing its purpose and potential.
