In high school, I read 1984, and Brave New World. This formed the foundation of the criterion by which I judge all political systems and leaders. In the almost five decades since, I've seen exactly nothing to prove my assessment was wrong.
It is obvious that the sole purpose of government / the nation state (which Nietszche called "The New Idol" in chapter 11 of Also Sprake Zarathustra), is the acquisition and sustaining of political power (wealth being an aspect of power). There is no limit to what people will do to acquire power; their capacity for evil should never be underestimated.
They are the embodiment of "hasd" - envy. Iblis' sin was envy. All evil sprung from that root, and the lust for political power is based on the human refusal to master the primordial trait of primates to compete for dominance over others in this manner. This, I believe could be one of the meanings of human beings "transformed into apes" mentioned in the Quran. They are less than human, and even less than the Vicegerents of Allah.
